We’re Not in Kansas Anymore

For readers who want to escape, transport, and wander to places beyond this world.

We’re Not in Kansas Anymore is Watermark’s genre-fiction book club, focusing on fantasy, science fiction, romantasy, and horror books that portal us from one world to another, from one time to another. We’ll talk about worldbuilding and magic and lore, certainly, but we’ll also discuss the human characteristics and experiences that transcend places and times.

Who are you, really? Board the ship, step through the portal, join hands with adventure and find yourself in the realms beyond.

Off the Map

For readers ready to go somewhere unexpected

Off the Map is Watermark’s book club for books that take us somewhere we didn’t expect to go — into unfamiliar worlds, morally messy territory, culturally specific lives, darker stories, stranger perspectives, and reading experiences outside our usual habits.

Come ready to venture beyond the familiar and see where the book takes you.

In the Margins

For readers who love to linger over the deeper questions.

In the Margins is Watermark’s literary book club, featuring novels that invite close reading, rich discussion, and plenty of room for interpretation. We’ll talk about characters, language, structure, memory, relationships, and all the things a book may be saying beneath the surface.

Look closely. What is happening underneath what we think we understand?

Some books are difficult because of what they ask us to confront. Others are extraordinary because of how they’re written. This one is both. James’s writing is astonishingly intelligent, wickedly funny, and often brutally beautiful. It’s not just the occasional remarkable sentence - it’s the sustained brilliance, page after page, each thought complicating the one before it. This will not be a comfortable read, but I think it will be an important one, and I can’t wait to discuss it with you. ~Lisa

Content Note: This novel contains graphic violence, graphic sexual violence, homophobia, and explicit sexual content. It may not be for everyone.

“A knockout. A brief, bright sprint through the Dublin mob scene, giving Sopranos, giving The Wire, begging for an HBO series. Hard-boiled, beautiful prose and propulsive story, wastes no time and leaves us breathless. Left me wanting more, in the best way.”

—Jacob Orlando, Porter Square Books, Massachusetts

“A sweeping and atmospheric novel of Ireland, whose people clung to their land in the face of colonialism during the days of the Great Hunger. O’Farrell focuses her lens on a family’s tragedy, trauma, guilt, and ultimately hope.”

—Betsy Von Kerens, The Bookworm of Omaha, Omaha
